History: Ranikhet has derived its name from Rani Padmini, who was so enamored by the place that she decided to stay there. The place is then come to known as Ranikhet, which means fields of Rani. Later British developed Ranikhet as army cantonment. Ranikhet is still a cantonment town and one can see soldiers in the area.
Sites to Visit: A nature lover's paradise, Ranikhet offers wonderful views of the Western Himalayas. Ranikhet also presents stunning view of the Nanda Devi. Jhoola Devi Ka Mandir was constructed some 400 years ago in honor of the local Goddess, who protected the people from man-eating tigers.
The other important temple is Kali Devi ka Mandir, which has a large number of bells. The site of the temple is believed to be 5000 years old.The other places that one can visit include Bhaludham, which is an artificial lake. Upat Kalika some four kilometres from Ranikhet on the main road to Almora is an ideal spot to admire snow capped Himalayan peaks.
Take in the panoramic views of the Himalayas and breathe in the fresh pine scented air even before you reach the main hill station. Ranikhet is a cantonment area and somewhat similar to Kasauli of Himachal as it is clean and reminds you of the gone by British raj with it's colonial buildings et al. Being under the army no major constructions have been allowed in Ranikhet allowing it to retain it's old world charm. One can go for long walks in the jungle or admire the lovely view of the Himalayas from Bhagirthi in the west to Nandakot in the east, all day long.
Chaubatia, 10 km from Ranikhet away houses the botanical gardens and a Govt fruit research institute where one see different varieties of exotic flowers and orchids. It also serves as a vantage point to view snow clad Himalayan mountain peaks including NandaDevi, Trishul, Nandaghunti and Nilkanth.
Uppat, 6 km away hoses a very beautiful 9- hole golf course among fruit orchards. One can have a game here on payment of charges, clubs can also be hired.Kallika, near Uppat is know for its Kali temple and affords excellent views.
Sites Nearby: Nainital and Almora are the beautiful places that one can head to from Ranikhet. Nainital is about 59 kilometers from Ranikhet and is an ideal place to spend your holidays. Almora some 50 kilometers is another wonderful town that you can visit. Just 38 kilometers from Ranikhet is Dwarahat, which is known for its ancient sculptures.
Adventure Sports: Ranikhet offers some wonderful treks for trekking enthusiasts. Adventure lovers can enjoy trekking to Kausani, Dunagiri and Sitalakhet.
How to Reach: Pantnagar is the nearest airport to Ranikhet, which is about 114 kilometers. The nearest railhead to Ranikhet is Kathgodam, which is at a distance of about 82 kilometers from Ranikhet. Ranikhet is well connected by road to other major towns.
Best Time to Visit: Though Ranikhet can be visited through out the year, April to June is the time when most people tour Ranikhet to escape from the heat and dust of the plains.
